Join us for a fascinating journey with Alison through the Earth’s dynamic story — from global disasters to local landscapes, minerals rocks  and glittering gemstones, to ancient limekilns. Includes an outdoor session with Duncan Wise discovering our special protected Dark Skies landscapes. These engaging Tuesday evening sessions (and one Wednesday!) are perfect for curious minds of all ages.

Programme of Classes

Tuesday 16th SeptemberGlobal Geological Disasters 2025. Explore recent natural disasters around the world, from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to landslides and tsunamis, and examine the geological processes behind them.

Tuesday 30th September Common Minerals. An introduction to the building blocks of the Earth, focusing on the most widespread minerals, their properties, and their importance in everyday life.

Tuesday 14th October Rare Minerals, Crystals and Gemstones. A journey into the world of unusual minerals, stunning crystals, and precious gemstones, including their formation, rarity, and cultural significance.

Tuesday 28th October Geology of Mining Areas around Knarsdale: Lime kilns. Discover the local geological history of Knarsdale and how limekilns shaped both the landscape and the community through quarrying and mining.

Tuesday 11th November Stratigraphy. Learn how layers of rock reveal the Earth’s history, and how geologists use stratigraphy to understand deep time, fossil records, and past environments.

Tuesday 25th November Special Protected Landscapes of the Northumberland and North Pennines National Parks: Dark Skies. A look at how geology and landscape conservation support these protected uplands, with a focus on their designation as internationally recognised Dark Sky areas — ending with a chance to stargaze if conditions allow.

Wednesday 3rd December The Past, Present and Future for Oil and Gas. Examine the geology of oil and gas, their role in global energy systems, and future challenges as the world transitions to more sustainable energy sources.

Tuesday 16th December Geology Meets Archaeology at the Surface. Explore how geology and archaeology intersect, from ancient quarries and stone tools to the way geology has shaped human history and settlement
